James Gunn Confirms 'Absolutely Zero CG' in Superman’s Flying Face After TV Spot Raises Eyebrows

DC Studios co-head James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.

A new 30-second promotional video showcased scenes of Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight. This latter shot sparked online debate, with viewers commenting on Superman's seemingly unnatural facial stillness while his hair and cape moved dynamically. Some attributed this to CGI imperfections.

However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot contained no CGI on Superman's face. He explained the effect was due to the close-up wide-angle lens used and emphasized that both the Svalbard location (where filming took place) and actor David Corenswet's performance were entirely real.

Despite Gunn's explanation, discussion continues, with some comparing the shot to similar scenes in Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Regardless of this specific scene, anticipation remains high for the Superman film, slated for release on July 11, 2025, as the inaugural film of the DCU's "Gods and Monsters" chapter.
