Hotwire Vehicles in 'Project Zomboid': Essential Guide

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 17,2025

In the vast world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Luckily, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring is the answer. This guide outlines the process and requirements.

Hotwiring in Project Zomboid is surprisingly simple, often requiring just a few button presses. However, prerequisites exist. While not demanding a top-tier character build, these requirements should be considered:

Hotwiring Requirements and Mechanics

Successfully hotwiring allows driving as long as fuel and vehicle condition permit, even without keys. You need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.

Hotwiring a Vehicle: Step-by-Step

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Open the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
  3. Select "Hotwire" and wait.

Once requirements are met, these steps work on any operable vehicle. Hotwiring is automatic; once complete, press W to start the engine. Note: Fuel is not guaranteed, so acquiring gas is advisable.

Leveling Electrical and Mechanical Skills

For non-Burglars, skill levels increase through in-game activities:

  • Electrical: Dismantling electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
  • Mechanics: Removing and reinstalling mechanical parts.

Books and magazines also provide skill boosts. Check mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves during looting. Project Zomboid server admins can directly award skill XP using the "/addxp" command (syntax displayed in the chat box). Appropriate tools (like a screwdriver) are necessary for dismantling or installation. Right-clicking a vehicle part and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" allows part removal.
