Author:Kristen Update:May 22,2025

IGN has exciting news for fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong: the game will be playable at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne starting September 18, 2025. As one of the most eagerly awaited games globally, Silksong has dominated the Steam wishlist charts for years. Developed by Team Cherry, a studio based in Adelaide, South Australia, the game's release has been tentatively set for 2025, but this event at ACMI provides a more concrete timeline for enthusiasts.

The playable demo of Silksong will be featured in ACMI's "Game Worlds" exhibition, which also showcases the game's intricate design and artistic direction. Visitors will have the opportunity to delve into the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s movements and attacks, as well as explore the logic behind the game’s challenging boss fights.

Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell, co-curators at ACMI, expressed their enthusiasm: "Since Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement in 2019, it has been one of the most anticipated indie games on the planet – and we are thrilled to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made game as a centrepiece of Game Worlds in September. From the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s different movements and attacks, to the logic behind the game’s most challenging boss fights – and of course, having the game playable in-gallery – our Silksong displays delve deeply into the details of the game's artistic direction and design. We’re so grateful to Team Cherry for trusting us with their work, and so excited to share that work with you!"

As part of the announcement, ACMI shared a sprite sheet from Silksong, one of several design elements that will be on display. The image was provided to IGN with permission.

With Silksong set to be playable at ACMI by September 18, fans are hopeful for a release before this date, possibly in August. Recent developments, including a brief appearance at Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct, have further fueled anticipation. During the hardware-focused presentation, Silksong was showcased with a few seconds of new gameplay and confirmation of Team Cherry’s updated 2025 launch plans, marking the most significant update on the game in years.

Originally announced for Nintendo Switch and PC, with versions for Xbox (and Game Pass), PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 planned for later, Silksong has been the subject of numerous intriguing teases. Team Cherry kicked off 2025 with a mysterious tease related to a chocolate cake recipe, sparking speculation about a potential re-reveal in April.
