Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Fuels Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Fever With a Picture of a Chocolate Cake

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 20,2025

Six years. That’s how long fans have waited for Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece. Through numerous gaming showcases and a seemingly confirmed pre-June 2023 release (courtesy of Microsoft, no less), Silksong has remained elusive. The Game Awards came and went without a peep. But could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the moment?

The Hollow Knight subreddit believes so, and it all started with a cake.

On January 15th, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen updated his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake, accompanied by the cryptic tweet: “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

With rumors swirling about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the timing was undeniably suspicious. And indeed, Nintendo did announce the Switch 2 that day. But was Pellen subtly hinting at the reveal, and if so, why?

This is where the Hollow Knight community went into full-blown detective mode. Fans reverse-image-searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit, published on April 2nd, 2024.

The significance? Nintendo confirmed the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. The theory? Pellen orchestrated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the cake tweet, teasing Silksong’s announcement.

The speculation doesn't stop there. Fans are dissecting Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, with one particularly compelling theory suggesting the "wr" could be part of a larger word, referencing a Silksong NPC, the Druid of the Moss Temple. His new name, "little bomey," adds another layer of mystery, potentially referencing a Southern Australian wine (though the spelling differs).

Remember, Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. But that was six years ago. Could Nintendo have secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, perhaps even a timed exclusive? Or is this all a case of overzealous fans reading too much into a cake?

We'll know in a few months. Until then, let's revisit everything revealed at the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement.
