GTA 6 Delayed Until May 2026

Rockstar has pushed back the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 26, 2026, a significant delay from its original Fall 2025 launch window.

In an official statement, Rockstar expressed regret about postponing what's anticipated to be the largest entertainment launch in history. "We deeply apologize for this extended wait," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto has been incredibly humbling for our team. We sincerely appreciate your continued support and patience as we perfect the game."

"With every title we release, we strive to surpass player expectations - Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We believe you'll agree this additional development time is necessary to achieve the quality standard you deserve."

While this confirms GTA 6's official release date, Rockstar hasn't shared any new game assets, meaning fans must continue waiting for the second trailer. Platform details also remain unconfirmed, leading to speculation about a potential simultaneous PC release alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in May 2026.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick had previously commented on the original release window during a February earnings call: "We feel very confident about our Fall 2025 target, though it's always wise to avoid absolute statements that might jinx development." In today's official statement regarding the delay, Zelnick expressed full support for Rockstar's decision to move the title into Take-Two's FY2027.

"We completely endorse Rockstar Games' choice to extend development for Grand Theft Auto VI, which we believe will redefine entertainment experiences and set new benchmarks for our industry," Zelnick stated. "While we understand the global anticipation surrounding this title, our commitment to quality remains unwavering. This decision positions us for sustained multi-year growth and increased shareholder value."

The delay reshapes the 2025-2026 gaming landscape, offering breathing room for major titles like Gearbox's Borderlands 4, EA's next Battlefield installment, Bungie's Marathon, and Sony's Ghost of Yotei. Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 will particularly benefit from avoiding direct competition with GTA 6's launch.

However, developers who rushed products to market ahead of GTA 6's original Fall 2025 window may face challenges. Additionally, publishers with titles planned for May 2026 will likely need to reassess their release strategies.
