Easy Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Mob Farm in Minecraft

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 20,2025

A mob spawner in *Minecraft* is as vital as a farm or a villager trading system. Here's an easy-to-follow guide on how to create an efficient mob farm in *Minecraft*.

How to Create a Mob Farm in Minecraft

Step 1: Collect Resources

Before you start building, gather plenty of blocks. Cobblestone and wood are ideal choices due to their abundance and ease of collection.

Step 2: Find a Place to Build the Spawner

To maximize mob spawning efficiency, build your spawner in the sky. Constructing it on the ground can lead to mobs spawning elsewhere, such as in caves or around you. Building over water is even more effective, as mobs won't spawn on water. Start by extending across a body of water, then build upwards about 100 blocks. Create a small platform for your spawner and install ladders for easy access. Finally, place a chest and connect four hoppers to it as shown in the image.

Step 3: Build the Main Tower

Next, surround the hoppers with blocks and build a tower 21 blocks high for XP farming, or 22 blocks for an auto farm. You can adjust the height later. Don't forget to place slabs on top of the hoppers.

Step 4: Build the Water Trenches

Construct a 7-block long and 2-block wide bridge on all four sides of the tower. Build 2-block high walls around each bridge, and place two water blocks at the end of each. Ensure the water flows correctly to guide mobs into the tower.

Step 5: Laying out the Structure and Filling Everything Up

Connect the water trenches to form a large square. The walls should be at least two blocks high to allow mob spawning. Fill the interior space, constructing walls, a floor, and a roof to complete the structure.

Step 6: Adding Torches and Slabs

The final touch involves placing torches and slabs on the roof of the spawner. This prevents mobs from spawning on top and ensures they fall into the trenches. Once done, wait for nightfall to see mobs falling to their demise.

Tips to Make the Mob Spawner in Minecraft More Efficient

While the basic mob spawner is now functional, there are several ways to enhance its efficiency:

Connect a Nether Portal

To avoid the hassle of climbing up and down, link a Nether Portal to your spawner. Alternatively, a water elevator can also be used.

Add Pistons to Easily Switch Between XP and Farming

Adjust the tower height to 22 blocks to kill mobs instantly upon falling. For flexibility, install pistons to switch between XP farming and auto-farming with a lever.

Add a Bed to Increase Spawn Rates

Placing a bed near your mob spawner can boost the spawn rate, attracting more mobs.

Place Carpets to Prevent Spiders

Spiders can clog your spawner by sticking to walls. Prevent this by placing carpets every other block, as spiders require two blocks to spawn, unlike other mobs.

With these steps and tips, you can create an efficient mob farm in *Minecraft* that will greatly enhance your gameplay experience.

*Minecraft is available now on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile.*
