Dynasty Warriors: Origins - Unlocking and Using the Horse Guide

Quick Links

Dynasty Warriors: Origins doesn't feature a dedicated sprint button; instead, your character automatically breaks into a run after taking a few steps. While this natural sprint helps you move quickly, vast battlefields often require traversing long distances to reach and rescue other officers in time to secure victory.

This is where your steed becomes essential, as it can be summoned at any moment both in the overworld and during combat. You can even engage enemies while mounted if you prefer hit-and-run tactics. Below are the steps to acquire your first horse, upgrade its stats, and swap between different mounts.

How To Unlock The First Horse In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Merchant with horse in overworld

You can obtain your first mount for free during Chapter 1 by interacting with a traveling merchant found in the open world. This vendor appears after you complete the second major mission, "Test Of Zheng Fei," and will be located along the path to the Battle Of Guangzong. Specifically, head northeast from Wan Castle toward the camp; the merchant stands beside his horse just before reaching the encampment. Simply talk to him to receive the gift, which will automatically equip your character.

To summon your horse instantly for mounting, press down on the left analog stick on consoles or hold V on a keyboard.

How To Level Up Your Horse In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Your mount gains experience points (XP) based on the missions completed while it is equipped, even if you don't actively ride it. XP is awarded for completing standard missions and main story battles, though Skirmishes do not grant horse progression. Missions are identified by a red diamond icon containing a soldier symbol in the center; these represent medium-length engagements.

The total XP earned depends on battle duration, as well as how frequently you ride your horse and use it to charge into enemy ranks. As your horse levels up, it unlocks unique buffs at specific intervals, with each mount offering distinct advantages.

How To Switch Horses In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Battle Preparation menu showing horse selection

While your initial horse is equipped by default, you can acquire and equip additional mounts later. To manage your steed, navigate to the Battle Preparation menu, which appears as the final option in the list on the left side of the screen. Each horse offers different perks, with some providing superior speed or performance compared to others, so it's wise to swap out when better options become available.

To unlock new horses, raise a region's peace level to its maximum capacity. Once achieved, a reward will appear at a nearby waypoint, typically in the form of a new mount ready for collection and use.
