Hideo Kojima Unveils Anime Adaptation for Death Stranding

Author:Kristen Update:Jul 24,2025

Death Stranding is set to expand beyond its live-action film with an anime adaptation in development. Ahead of the June release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, director Hideo Kojima has confirmed an anime version of the acclaimed game is in progress.

In an interview with Vogue Japan (via VGC), Kojima discussed his work with A24 on the live-action Death Stranding film, concluding with a mention of an anime project. Here’s his statement, via machine translation:

"I am currently collaborating with A24 on a live-action film version of 'DEATH STRANDING.' Recent game-to-film adaptations, such as 'The Last of Us,' stay true to the original story, while others, like 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie,' cater to game fans. Both approaches have their strengths, but as a filmmaker, I aim to create a 'DEATH STRANDING' film that stands out as a cinematic achievement, targeting recognition at festivals like Cannes and Venice. Additionally, we are working on an anime adaptation."

No animation studio has been confirmed, but an anime adaptation of Death Stranding is clearly in the works.

In 2023, A24 announced its partnership with Kojima Productions for a live-action Death Stranding film. Kojima emphasized that the movie would not simply replicate the game. "Our goal is to appeal not only to game fans but to all cinema lovers," he said. "We’re crafting a unique Death Stranding universe, exclusive to the film medium."

Earlier this year, reports indicated that Michael Sarnoski, director of A Quiet Place: Day One, joined the project to write and direct the Death Stranding film. Star Norman Reedus expressed enthusiasm, stating he would "absolutely" reprise his role if given the chance.

The prospect of a Death Stranding anime sparks intrigue about its potential direction. Depending on the studio involved, the adaptation could offer a fresh take on the game’s universe. A version crafted by Studio Trigger, for instance, could bring a vibrant, distinctive flair.
