Bandai Namco has recently announced an exciting new addition to the gaming world with *Death Note: Killer Within*. This game promises to encapsulate the thrilling essence of the iconic *Death Note* series, delivering a unique multiplayer experience that echoes the popular game *Among Us*.
Two weeks ago, rumors swirled about a new *Death Note* game after it was rated in Taiwan. Fans speculated whether it would follow the original manga's storyline, serve as a sequel, or be a new standalone experience. Today, their questions are answered with the launch of *Death Note: Killer Within*, set to hit PC, PS4, and PS5 on November 5. It will be part of PlayStation Plus’ free monthly lineup, offering subscribers an early taste of the game.
Developed by Grounding, Inc. and published by Bandai Namco, *Death Note: Killer Within* is an online-only game that mirrors the dynamics of *Among Us*. Players will take on the roles of either Kira, the notorious antagonist with the Death Note, or members of L's team, the world-renowned detective tasked with stopping him. Up to 10 players per session will engage in a gripping game of cat and mouse, where one team tries to expose Kira and claim the Death Note, while the other strives to protect Kira and eliminate L's team.
Customization plays a significant role in enhancing the gameplay experience. Players can unlock up to seven types of accessories and special effects that are displayed during crucial moments of the game. While it's strictly an online experience, the developers recommend using voice chat to strategize with teammates or to passionately argue your innocence.
With its inclusion in the PlayStation Plus November lineup alongside *Ghostwire: Tokyo* and *Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged*, PS Plus subscribers will enjoy early access without additional cost. PC players can also join the fun via Steam, with cross-play ensuring a robust player base across platforms.
The game's pricing remains a mystery, which raises concerns about its market competitiveness. If priced too high, *Death Note: Killer Within* might struggle against other deduction-based party games like *Among Us*, potentially facing a launch fate similar to *Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout*. *Fall Guys* initially launched for free on PlayStation Plus in August 2020 but struggled to maintain its momentum due to a lack of competitive features and a $20 price tag. Eventually, Epic Games acquired it, transforming it into a free-to-play model with in-game purchases.
Whether *Death Note: Killer Within* will have a launch price is yet to be seen. Hopefully, the game's connection to the popular *Death Note* IP will help it stand out in the competitive party game market.
The gameplay of *Death Note: Killer Within* revolves around two main phases reminiscent of *Among Us*. During the Action Phase, players roam virtual streets, collecting clues and completing tasks while keeping an eye out for suspicious behavior. This is when Kira can wield the Death Note to eliminate NPCs or other players, but every move is under scrutiny.
The drama peaks during the Meeting Phase, where players gather to discuss their observations, vote on who might be Kira, and strive to bring justice—or mistakenly condemn an innocent. Unlike *Among Us*, Kira can enlist followers who communicate privately and steal IDs, crucial for gameplay where real names hold power. These followers can even take over the Death Note if Kira decides to pass it on.
On the other side, Investigators work diligently to piece together clues, narrowing down suspects to unmask Kira. If you're playing as L, you have unique abilities to steer the investigation, from installing surveillance cameras during Action Phases to guiding discussions and exposing inconsistencies in the Meeting Phases.
Success in *Death Note: Killer Within* hinges on teamwork and deception. If the game captures the imagination of both fans and newcomers alike, we can anticipate thrilling streamer highlights and dramatic gameplay among friends.
