DC's upcoming film adaptation of The Authority faces setbacks, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Initially announced as a major project within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the film has been placed on the "back burner."

Gunn cited several challenges, including the evolving overall narrative and the competitive landscape, particularly the success of Amazon's The Boys. He acknowledged the difficulty in developing The Authority in a market already saturated with similar themes and characters. Further complicating matters are ongoing projects featuring characters DC Studios wants to integrate into the larger narrative.

"Honestly, Authority's been the one that's been the hardest," Gunn stated during a DC Studios presentation. "…getting it right in a world with The Boys and a world with all the things that The Authority influenced that came out after it…So I will admittedly say it's a little bit more on the back burner right now."

Despite the delay, one Authority member, The Engineer/Angela Spica, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman film. This technologically gifted character is considered one of the team's most powerful members.

Other Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters projects have also encountered hurdles. Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, experienced setbacks, while Booster Gold is progressing smoothly. Paradise Lost remains a priority, with the pilot script currently underway. Finally, Swamp Thing, while not crucial to the overarching narrative, awaits the availability of its director, James Mangold.
