Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Statements

2K Games and Firaxis Games confirmed the Meta Quest 3/3S exclusivity. Dennis Shirk, Civ VII Executive Franchise Producer, expressed excitement about launching "a new era of strategy excellence." Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the momentum in mixed reality gaming, calling Civ VII VR "a genuine Civ experience" tailored for strategy enthusiasts. Notably, despite the game's release on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR immerses players in a "Command Table" interface, offering a unique perspective on the game world. Players can zoom in for detailed views or take a broader strategic overview, mimicking a tabletop experience. The game supports both virtual and mixed reality modes, seamlessly switching between immersive VR and the integration of the Command Table into the player's physical space.

Single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer are all available, supporting up to four players with Meta Quest headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K and a Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games acknowledged player feedback from the early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements to enhance intuitiveness and map readability, addressing concerns raised about the Steam version's UI. Future updates will also include community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, diverse map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is planned for March, focusing on UI refinements, AI balancing, diplomacy adjustments, and bug fixes.

Civilization VII VR's release is slated for Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a precise date yet to be announced. The standard version of Civilization VII launched on February 11, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. For more details, visit our Civilization 7 page.
