Chris Evans Confirms No Return to MCU for Avengers

Author:Kristen Update:May 29,2025

Captain America star Chris Evans has debunked recent rumors suggesting his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in *Avengers: Doomsday* or any other upcoming films. Despite reports from Deadline claiming he would reprise his role alongside Robert Downey Jr., Evans clarified to *Esquire* that such claims are entirely false.

This clarification came after Anthony Mackie, who currently holds the mantle of Captain America following Evans' retirement post-*Avengers: Endgame*, mentioned that his manager had informed him Evans would return. However, when Mackie personally inquired, Evans assured him that he was "happily retired." When *Esquire* reached out to Evans directly, he firmly dismissed the rumors, stating, "That’s not true, though. This always happens. I’ve just stopped responding to it."

While Evans hasn’t returned to his iconic role, he did make a brief cameo as his former Fox character, Johnny Storm, in *Deadpool & Wolverine*. Although this marked a return to the MCU in some capacity, it was clearly a minor, comedic appearance compared to his central role as Captain America.

The MCU landscape remains uncertain following Jonathan Majors’ departure from the franchise due to legal issues. Majors, who portrayed Kang, was originally slated to become the next major villain akin to Thanos, but his removal has created a void. The studio recently announced that Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., will step into the role of the new antagonist. This announcement reignited speculation about the potential return of other original Avengers, though no further confirmations have been made.

Notably, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, revealed that his character will not feature in *Avengers: Doomsday* but will play a pivotal role in its sequel, *Avengers: Secret Wars*. The Russo Brothers, who directed several previous Avengers films, are helming the project, which will reportedly explore the multiverse further. Additionally, Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter is expected to make an appearance, adding another layer of nostalgia for fans.
