Anvils are essential for repairing items in Minecraft. Creating one requires 3 iron blocks and 4 iron ingots (a total of 31 iron ingots!), demanding significant iron ore mining and smelting. The crafting recipe is shown below:

Anvil Functionality

The anvil's crafting menu has three slots; only two can be used for repair. Two identical, damaged tools can be combined to create a new one. Alternatively, you can combine a damaged tool with the materials used in its creation.

Repairing consumes experience points; more durability restored means a higher XP cost. Note that some items, especially enchanted ones, may have unique repair requirements.

Repairing Enchanted Items

Repairing enchanted items is similar to repairing regular items, but requires more experience points and often involves other enchanted items or enchanted books. Combining two enchanted items can result in a higher-level, fully repaired item. The combined enchantments are added together, including durability. The success and cost vary depending on item placement – experimentation is key!

You can also use enchanted books in place of a second enchanted item to enhance an item's enchantments.

Anvil Durability and Limitations

Anvils themselves have durability and will eventually break after repeated use, indicated by cracks appearing on the anvil. Remember to craft replacements. Anvils cannot repair all items; scrolls, books, bows, and chainmail require alternative methods.

Repairing Items Without an Anvil

Minecraft's versatility extends to item repair. A crafting table allows for combining identical items to increase their durability, offering a convenient alternative to anvils, especially during travel.
