We Build LEGO Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus Rex, The Most Impressive Skeleton Model in 68 Million Years

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 21,2025

The LEGO Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus Rex set, a LEGO Store exclusive, is a breathtakingly ambitious build. Its sheer size is immediately striking; this is a meticulously crafted 1:12 scale model of a real T-Rex. Upon closer inspection, the detail is astounding: notice the varying lengths of the ribs forming a realistic rib cage, and how the dark bricks cleverly create shadows, highlighting the light-colored "bone" bricks. Despite its intricate appearance, the build is surprisingly straightforward, making its impressive complexity all the more remarkable.

My childhood fascination with dinosaurs, particularly the towering T-Rex skeleton at the American Museum of Natural History, was reignited by Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder." The passage describing the dinosaur's immense size perfectly captured the awe-inspiring spectacle: *"It came on great oiled, resilient, striding legs. It towered thirty feet above half of the trees, a great evil god, folding its delicate watchmaker's claws close to its oily reptilian chest. Each lower leg was a piston, a thousand pounds of white bone, sunk in thick ropes of muscle, sheathed over in a gleam of pebbled skin like the mail of a terrible warrior."*

Like many, I initially envisioned the T-Rex as depicted in older illustrations:

However, scientific understanding has evolved. The T-Rex, contrary to popular depictions, didn't walk upright with a dragging tail. Its posture was more horizontal, with its tail acting as a counterbalance, as seen in this image of "Sue," the most complete T-Rex skeleton ever discovered (90%):

The discovery of Sue, and specifically the *gastralia* (belly ribs), revolutionized our understanding of the T-Rex's physique. These bones, initially overlooked, revealed a much heavier creature than previously thought—nine to ten tons, not five to seven—with a substantial belly. Compare this to earlier portrayals, like the lean T-Rex in the 1993 film *Jurassic Park*:

This life-sized model, based on Sue's skeleton, represents our current, accurate understanding:

The LEGO T-Rex model accurately reflects this updated scientific understanding, showcasing the horizontal posture. While it omits the *gastralia*, the ribcage suggests a "barrel-chested" build, contrasting with fictional portrayals. The forward-facing arms align with the latest Sue exhibit at the Field Museum.

The set, contained in 25 sealed bags, is assembled in stages: the stand, backbone, neck, legs, ribs, arms, tail, and finally, the head. While the legs and torso are fixed, the arms, head, and tail are posable. At nearly three-and-a-half feet long, it demands a substantial display space—a wide surface like a dresser or coffee table is ideal.

Technically part of the LEGO Jurassic Park franchise, the set includes Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler minifigures and a Jurassic Park-branded placard. However, this tie-in feels somewhat forced, particularly considering the minifigures are from the original *Jurassic Park*, not *Jurassic World*. The set's name, "Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus Rex," also lacks a direct movie reference. Interestingly, the instructions allow for detaching the minifigures and placard, highlighting the model's standalone magnificence. This suggests the Jurassic Park branding is ultimately superfluous; the set's size, detail, and price point are its strongest selling points, akin to the LEGO Titanic set.

The LEGO Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus Rex (Set #10335), retailing at $269.99 and comprising 3011 pieces, is a LEGO Store exclusive.
