Atari's Breakout Beyond Reimagines Classic Brick-Breaking Action

Author:Kristen Update:Dec 21,2025

The iconic 1976 Breakout game is reborn with a bold new style, nearly five decades later. Breakout Beyond redefines Atari's legendary brick-breaker, preserving the classic paddle-and-ball mechanics while introducing a dynamic sideways-scrolling twist.

Crafted by Choice Provisions, known for the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond guides players through a left-to-right journey. The core goal remains smashing bricks, with dazzling lights and effects that escalate as players chain combos.

Unique bricks unleash spectacular effects, from explosive bursts to a powerful laser cannon. The game features 72 vibrant levels and an unlockable endless mode with a global online leaderboard. For shared fun, Breakout Beyond offers local two-player co-op.

Initially slated as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond is now under Atari’s wing, with the company taking over to finalize its development.

“We’re excited to deliver this gem to our community,” said Ethan Stearns, Atari’s senior director of games publishing. “The team saw it as a brilliant evolution, keeping Breakout’s core intact while adding a fresh spin. Breakout Beyond is a stellar addition to the franchise, and we’re eager to see the incredible combos players will create.”

The Amico, unveiled in 2018 with a planned 2020 launch, has yet to materialize, facing multiple setbacks and delays. Last year, Atari acquired Intellivision’s branding and rights, excluding the Amico console.

Breakout Beyond arrives later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
