Larian Studios, the creator of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, has announced a complete shift in focus to its next project, initiating a media silence for the foreseeable future. While Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's full attention is now dedicated to its unannounced next title.

Swen Vincke, Larian's head, recently tweeted a reflection on the studio's journey with Baldur's Gate 3, acknowledging its remarkable success but hinting at future endeavors. A subsequent statement to VideoGamer confirmed the studio's commitment to its new game and the commencement of its media blackout.

Details about Larian's next game remain scarce. What we do know is that it won't be a Baldur's Gate sequel or any other D&D-related project. Instead, it's an entirely original creation, a direction the studio chose after internal discussions failed to generate sufficient enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate follow-up.

Previous statements by Vincke offer only vague clues. In November 2023, he teased the project as a boundary-pushing endeavor. Earlier, in July 2023, he mentioned the possibility of a new Divinity: Original Sin game, but emphasized that it wouldn't be the studio's immediate priority.

The nature of Larian's next game remains a mystery. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, a departure into science fiction, a contemporary setting, or even a completely new genre is within the realm of possibility. However, it's likely to be some considerable time—potentially years—before any concrete information is revealed.
