ASUS Xbox Handheld Images Leak Online

Author:Kristen Update:May 23,2025

It looks like photos of ASUS' Xbox-branded handheld device, codenamed Project Kennan, have surfaced online, stirring excitement among gaming enthusiasts. As first reported by 91mobiles and noted by Eurogamer, two images of the ASUS ROG Ally 2 — one in white and one in black — were leaked via the Indonesian certification office, which linked to a now-deleted listing on the U.S.'s FCC website.

Both versions of the device showcase buttons tailored for Xbox, featuring the familiar Y, B, A, and X layout, distinct from PlayStation's triangle, circle, cross, and square, or Nintendo's X, A, B, and Y. The black variant's image is particularly noteworthy as it prominently displays an Xbox button next to the thumbstick, albeit without the definitive 'X' symbol. At this stage, the technical specifications remain fragmented, leaving us uncertain about their performance and any potential differences between the black and white models.

Windows Central's Jez Corden has reported that these devices are currently undergoing open testing at Microsoft's headquarters, hinting at an imminent reveal, possibly around May 20.

Last month, ASUS Republic of Gamers' X/Twitter account teased the gaming community with a glimpse of both a Republic of Gamers (ROG) Xbox controller and handheld system. The official Xbox account responded with a playful wide-eyed gif, suggesting that a formal announcement may be on the horizon.

This leak follows an earlier report from IGN detailing Microsoft's expansive video game hardware plans, which include a full next-gen Xbox slated for 2027 and an Xbox-branded gaming handheld expected to launch later in 2025.

While the ASUS ROG Ally 2 is not a Microsoft-made console, the tech giant is reportedly preparing to launch its own first-party Xbox handheld in 2027, aligning with the release of its next-gen Xbox. Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer has hinted that a first-party Xbox handheld is still years away.

Moreover, the successor to the Xbox Series X is reportedly in full production and set to release in two years, resonating with Xbox president Sarah Bond's recent assertion that Microsoft is "moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware," with a focus on delivering the most significant technological leap in console history.
