Transmogging and Weapon Customization

Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) offers players extensive progression options, including a compelling transmogrification system. A March 1, 2025, website post detailed player progression and customization, with Associate Game Director Julien outlining the team's vision.

The game features transmogging, allowing players to alter weapon stats while retaining their preferred cosmetic appearance. Unlock this feature by building a Forge in your Hideout; once built, access it directly from the inventory menu.

Julien explained, "The Forge is crucial for inventory management. You can upgrade or dismantle weapons and gear there—we'll share more about the Hideout in a future article." Furthermore, players can mix and match weapon components: "Combine the blade of one weapon, the guard of another, and the handle of a third for a truly unique look."

A New Progression Loop

Following IGN Fan Fest 2025, where Creative Director Charles Benoit discussed combat and progression, Ubisoft provided further details on player progression mechanics.

Julien addressed the impact of two protagonists: "Having two characters with unique archetypes in feudal Japan required rethinking player progression. We aimed to maintain the philosophy of mastery and martial arts."

Mastery, Abilities, and Knowledge Ranks

AC Shadows features unique mastery trees for Naoe (shinobi/assassin) and Yasuke (samurai). Each tree focuses on their archetype.

Julien stated, "Mastery trees offer freedom to specialize in weapons, playstyles, or archetypes. Invested points unlock additional bonuses, reinforcing progress."

Abilities within the mastery trees provide gameplay twists and increased damage. However, some abilities and mastery points require specific Knowledge Rank levels, increased through non-violent activities like finding Lost Pages, praying at Shrines, Kuji-kiri Meditation (Naoe), or learning Kata (Yasuke).

Customizing Your Playstyle

AC Shadows offers extensive playstyle customization. Perks "modify, enhance, or specialize equipment," providing stat improvements, affliction influences, and unique gameplay conditions.

Despite initial archetypes, players can deviate. Example builds showcase customization: Naoe can be an aggressive ground fighter, while Yasuke can focus on stealth and ranged combat. Perks and abilities enhance these styles.

With recent reveals, anticipation for AC Shadows' March 20, 2025, release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC is high. Stay updated with our follow-up article!
