Amazon's Android App Store to Close After Decade

Amazon's Android Appstore to Close its Doors

Fans of Amazon's Android Appstore will soon need to find an alternative. TechCrunch reports that Amazon is closing its Android app store on August 20th, 2024. The service will continue to operate on Fire TV and Fire Tablets.

The Appstore, launched in 2011, has had a decade-long run. While this longevity might be seen as a success, the closure leaves developers and users in a difficult position. According to Amazon's support page, apps installed from the store may not receive future updates or support.

The Shifting Landscape of App Stores

The timing of the closure is somewhat ironic, coinciding with the rise of alternative app stores. Amazon's Appstore never achieved widespread popularity, likely due to a lack of compelling features to attract users and developers. Competitors like the Epic Games Store, with its free games program, offer a more attractive proposition.

This closure serves as a reminder that even large companies can't guarantee long-term support for all their ventures.
