In recent years, anticipation for a The Last of Us sequel has been palpable online. Despite mixed reactions to the second game, many hoped Naughty Dog would address criticisms in a potential Part III, or perhaps explore the universe through a spin-off. However, Neil Druckmann's recent comments surprised even the most dedicated fans.
During a joint interview with screenwriter Craig Mazin, discussing both the HBO adaptation and the games themselves, Druckmann revealed his struggles following the sequel's release during the COVID-19 pandemic. He described feeling unwell, overwhelmed, and particularly vulnerable to negative online feedback. The constant exposure to reviews and online discussions led him to question his own work, grappling with self-doubt and the fear of having irrevocably damaged the franchise.
When asked about a potential third installment, Druckmann sighed, acknowledging the predictable nature of the question. He stated, however, that fans shouldn't expect another The Last of Us game, hinting that the current storyline may have reached its conclusion.
