The surprise announcement that development of Space Marine 3 has begun sent ripples of excitement and concern through the Warhammer 40,000 community, especially given its timing just six months after the release of Space Marine 2. Publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive made the announcement in mid-March, amidst ongoing discussions about the future content updates for Space Marine 2.
In a recent blog post, both companies addressed the community's concerns head-on, reassuring fans that Space Marine 2 will continue to receive robust support. They emphasized that the development of Space Marine 3 does not signal the end of Space Marine 2's lifecycle. "Space Marine 3 does not mean the end of Space Marine 2's development. Far from it. No teams are shifting over, no one is abandoning the game, and our plans to bring more awesome content to Space Marine 2 remain," the statement clarified.
The companies outlined their ongoing commitment to Space Marine 2, confirming that the year one roadmap is still in place, with Patch 7 scheduled for release in mid-April. Excitingly, they also announced plans for a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons in the coming months. They teased, "Trust us, there are surprises even dataminers haven’t found out about :)" hinting at more content yet to be revealed.
The announcement of Space Marine 3 is seen as the beginning of a new project, still years away from release. The developers expressed their gratitude for the community's enthusiasm and support, which has fueled their motivation for this new endeavor. "Many of you were very excited for this project and this makes us incredibly happy and motivated. Thank you for the unwavering support," they stated.
The new class for Space Marine 2 has sparked speculation among fans, with many hoping for an Apothecary class, akin to a medic, or even a Librarian class, which would introduce warp-powered space magic into the gameplay. As for the new melee weapon, fans have expressed a desire for the iconic axe featured in Secret Level's Warhammer 40,000 animated episode, with some modders already bringing this vision to life.
The decision to move forward with Space Marine 3 comes on the heels of Space Marine 2's successful launch. In an interview with IGN, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits hinted at the potential for story DLC and shared that ideas for Space Marine 3 were already in discussion. "Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel," Willits revealed, suggesting a continuation of the narrative and the introduction of new enemy factions, as reported by IGN.
