Conway’s Game of Life was created by mathematician John Conway in 1970.
The Cellular Automaton
This classic cellular automaton unfolds on an infinite two-dimensional grid where each cell exists in one of two states: alive or dead. As the game progresses through generations, a cell’s future state is determined by its eight surrounding neighbors—those adjacent horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
How Generations Evolve
The starting configuration represents Generation 1. Subsequent generations emerge as rules are applied simultaneously across every cell on the board, meaning births and deaths occur at the same time. This process repeats iteratively to shape future states based on specific survival and reproduction criteria:
- Survival: An existing live cell remains alive if it has exactly 2 or 3 live neighbors.
- Birth: A dead cell becomes alive only when it is surrounded by exactly 3 live neighbors.
The Balance of Complexity
While countless rule variations exist, Conway tested numerous combinations before finalizing these particular parameters. Some rules lead to rapid extinction, while others cause unbounded expansion that fills the entire grid. The selected rules sit precisely on the edge between chaos and stability—a "boundary" where complex, interesting patterns emerge due to the delicate balance between population growth and decay.
